When I worked in a bookshop I was amazed by the number of people who bought "true crime" books. Utter cunts to a man, all of 'em.
One of them threatened to kneecap me once, too.

Our phones had caller ID & I'd made a note of his mobile no. (in case I needed to call back). The book that he (badly) instructed his (dim, chavvy) girlfriend to get was for a birthday party that evening...
So I got my other half (I was out at a private view) to set him up FILTHY profile on a gay dating website, with his number. We called up about 3AM- He answered the phone screaming "WHERE THE FUCK DID YOU GET THIS NUMBER?????! (trustory).

However, I think we all have some kind of fascination with our crims, decent law abiding folk also buy into this kind of thing ;-]

Though there are good books written on the subject these books written by violent murderers sensationalising their crimes shed NO light on the subject & just serve as subhuman scum wank-fodder.
NB- Utterly subjective viewpoint from years of dealing with knuckle-dragging, ill-mannered mouth-breathers.

Might I point out though, that Mr Charlie Charles Bronson is a thoroughly respectable criminal whose never violently murdered anyone ;-D
