I got infected via a Java exploit embedded within an advert on a trusted website (don't know which as I had several tabs open as always at the time). Took me the thick end of a week to fully eradicate the bastard thing. Java had been silently failing to update for a couple of revisions so the hole was well known by this point.
I'm sure it has its uses, but I genuinely haven't missed it. I strongly recommend you uninstall it and see if you do.

But why would you want to have a known security risk laying around if it's not in use? If you just disable it you leave yourself open to something or someone reenabling it without your knowledge.

no longer ship with Java anyway due to it's problems. Most people with a newish PC / MAC may not even have it installed. Even so, it's just a quick trip to the control panel to rid yourself of it.
