First chapter of a horror story
I made this!
Not quite getting scary yet, of course, it's just setting up who the characters are.
I really mostly want feedback on anything you think is relevant, because I want it to turn out as good as possible.
I have a plan that involves ~~spooky forbidden knowledge~~ and also insanity-driven-murder, so, uh, basically pick any King novel and you'll be right at home.
I had about 1400 words yesterday and, having not slept since then, now have about 6200. So, uh, whoops. Think I need some feedback.

Some good wit there
- but I feel like you're dumping big dollops of info on me every few paragraphs. It might just be my taste, but I prefer to learn things just a touch slower: hold back on the reveal about the Rev's alcoholism, or Elizabeth's journalist career till later.
In King's novels, he'd often keep a character as a background extra for a good while, then give you their story in a rush in the chapter where they were the star for a while - usually just before they die horribly, of course.
Keep at it! Write plenty, edit later.
