Sarah Castor-Perry has done another Naked Scientists Science Scrapbook - this one explaining the inner workings of the noisy firey things that keep you in the air. Hope you enjoy!
As always, I'm hitting "I made this" as I had some say in the script, and it's coming from the Naked Scientists stable. Credit to Sarah Castor-Perry and John Aveson.

The things before the combustion chamber aren't turbines. Turbines extract energy from fluids, while pumps and compressors are what you use to put energy in.
It's like the difference between an electric motor and a generator, or a microphone and a speaker; they're basically the same but they do opposite things.
