I hadn't noticed a market problem
When I bought my first house there was a problem, I thought - interest rates were over 10 per cent and I had to buy in a SE London shit hole. Then there was black Wednesday and I think rates spiked at 18 per cent. They removed tax relief of mortgage interest. I thought I was fucked forever. Wrongly so.
If you don't like house prices in the SE, move north.

Nothing wrong with the market
The government and the construction industry are restricting supply nicely.
1. It keeps the industry profitable.
2. Every government since the 80's has been fucking terrified of house prices dropping because of the massive negative equity/debt problems it would cause, leading, of course, to lost votes.
