Tinfoil hat time.
Apparently this thing pumps electromagnetic interference through all the cables in your house to deter spiders and "Pests".
It also claims to be ultrasonic but will not affect cats and dogs (or fish) but will deter rats and mice.

Nice
but they probably don't work, most independent and reputable studies haven't shown any great difference in pest deterrence.
My own test - I tried one similar - showed no difference.

Had a quick Wiki
Turns out Cockroaches detect electromagnetic waves through their genitals so rather than repel them it probably just gets them off (well in my mind anyway)

I concur*
- I've been spraying a solution of conker sap around the doors and windows of my house for ages, and there certainly appear to be less spiders invading the house than before I started.

I found one of those in my bathroom yesterday and thought it was the perfect size to give my ear a good old seeing to.
