Best and worst TV ads
"I'd like to give that dodo off the 5 Alive adverts a good kicking," says tom.joad. And luckily, there's tasty, tasty Cillit Bang to clean up the blood stains when you've finished. Tell us about TV adverts.

Strongbow
In this day and age of strict advertising standards, it amazes me that Strongbow have continually been allowed to claim through numerous TV adverts down the years that their beverage quenches thirst. Err, no it doesn’t. Alcohol dehydrates you: it does not quench thirst, it makes thirst worse. You are not going to feel any less thirsty after having consumed an alcoholic beverage. The opposite, in fact. I’m not sure how many other ways I can put this.
I’m sure there are many other brands of alcohol that are guilty of this, particularly on the cider side of the market, but Strongbow is the one that stands out the most for me what with their ‘Get a thirst, first’ slogan.
Grumble.

I'm going to say no names
but somebody within the realms of /qotw and /offtopic thought that beer (and I guess cider) were NOT dehydrating, because they are at least 85%+ water!
No names!!

Different things
1. Cider quenches thirst pretty effectively. This is a short-term effect.
2. Cider has a dehydrating action. This is a medium-term effect.
So the reason they get away with such a claim is that it's true.

True
Thirst can be quenched by inflating a balloon in the stomach, as 'thirst' is switched off by distention of the stomach itself; even if this doesn't hydrate you.

"Ahh"
You'd have to be a moron though to want to quench your thirst with something that's only going to make you thirstier in the long run.

The water in alcoholic beverages
will quench your thirst and hydrate you, in the short term, as snopes said.
But once that water's been pissed out, the alcohol remains to be metabolised, and this requires water. Because you've already excreted the excess water, you then become dehydrated.
