It never happened (short version).Long version - Al's first wife (his true love) didn't remarry thinking he'd died in 'Nam. They lived happily ever after and Al didn't ever join the Quantum Leap project, so no project. Sam was left bouncing around time.

But they never said 'which' home, was it the Quantum Leap project or was it back home on the farm he grew up on?
Watch the last few episodes again and it kind of makes sense?
