In The ArmySomeone else’s post reminded me of this.
I was in the Army on a mountain climbing training course. We were climbing up the side of some mountain. It was pissing down and blowing a gale and we were soaking wet and miserable. Then we got to a point where two mountains met and made a kind of steep valley or wide gully. You couldn't see the tops of he mountains for the fog/clouds. We were about 10 metres below where the clouds started looking across to some stunning scenery. The we heard a roll of what sounded like thunder. A long sustained drumming sound. Then one of the most amazing sights of my life.
Out of the cloud burst a herd of deer. The fog clung to their flanks and streamed off their antlers like living banners leaving crazy swirls of fog in the air. They were almost close enough to touch. They stormed by us trailing fog and galloped off into the distance. Nobody spoke for about 10 minutes. Bloody awesome.
Wish I'd had live rounds with me.
