Bean curd is tofu, it doesn't really taste of anything much,it may have been fermented bean curd, which is good but a bit strange, like the blue cheese of the East.

I was going to say the same thing.Tofu tastes like whatever it's cooked with, or like nothing if eaten by itself. So maybe this was an allergy?
