I once drilled through a cable...... excusable enough I guess, if I hadn't fixed and plastered over said cable less than an hour previously.

An hour previously?You were using loads of quick-dry Polyfilla weren't you? Or were you on a Penalty Clause and had to finish the job and get off-site that day?
