This book changed my life
The Goat writes, "Some books have made a huge impact on my life." It's true. It wasn't until the b3ta mods read the Flashman novels that we changed from mild-mannered computer operators into heavily-whiskered copulators, poltroons and all round bastards in a well-known cavalry regiment.
What books have changed the way you think, the way you live, or just gave you a rollicking good time?
Friendly hint: A bit of background rather than just a bunch of book titles would make your stories more readable

Auschwitz by Laurence Rees
On one page you can read a sentence showing the brutality and hatred humans are capable of. The next line will show you the humanity and sacrifice that humans are capable of.
I found it a hard read as I lost a large branch of my family tree at Birkenau. I felt the whole spectrum of human emotions while reading this book.
If I was education minister I would make sure that every young adult reads this book before they leave school.
Not just for its historical content, but, just though they know how bad the results of racism can be.

It is a fine, fine book...
And one I actually broke up with a girl over. I was reading it as part of my research for a play I was in ('Singer' by Peter Flannery) and my then-girlfriend said:
"I think it's disgusting that people can write books about that place. And as for the the place itself, it should be knocked down."
I tried reasoning with her along the lines of "but we must never ever be allowed to forget this in order to try and prevent it from ever happening again", but she was having none of it.
That kicked off a row that made me realise that even though she could suck a golf ball through a hosepipe, she was thick as pig shit.

Great book on the holocaust....
Hitler's Willing Executioners by Goldhagen. Shocking, but very good.

there were books
written in Germany in the 30s describing its slow deliberate descent into justified fascism ( taking away liberties for the sake of security) which no one took notice of at the time and treated with ridicule
I would make these compulsory - especially considering the direction we're heading in today

horrific place
I did a photographic study of the place and was horrified by it.
Despite the school kids comment above, I think all politicians should go there on first election as an example of what happens if they get it wrong!
