Dorian Graywasnt really a cop out, it was all building to it. I think from the moral point of view of the story, Dorian had to pay penance for his deal with the devil, and had to die.
edit: its also to do with beauty. Beauty has to die, it can't be infinite or else it isn't beautiful, it's just ordinary.
