Having meant to read it for years,and only having heard good things about it, I finally got around to reading WG Sebald's The Rings of Saturn a few months ago.
It utterly lives up to the hype. It's brilliant.
No funnies: just a genuine recommendation.

Now try... Austerlitz. Incredibly good. I've just bought The Emigrants, which someone said is his best book- given the standard of the other two, I can't wait...
