It's very long...Because it was written as a serial for a newspaper. As such he was getting paid by the installment.
However, it's a superb read about how revenge, a vast fortune and a beautiful woman can indeed lead to happiness. A lesson for us all I think.

'zactly!It's formed the basis of my life plan (though I'm going to try and avoid the prison bit and skip straight to the riches, women and revenge bit)
