Does anyone else do 'Train Library'
or whatever it's being called now? Basically if you finish a book on the train/bus you leave it there for another passenger to read. There's a group which leave stickers inside books for that reason, but I prefer the idea of littering in a literate manner.

Weirdly, the first book I picked up was 'A Thousand Splendid Suns', which you should NEVER read when you're around other human beings. The ending is completely traumatising. So it was also the first book I left. :P

(It's a good book, though.)

Not on trains
But nearly always when on holiday. If the apartments don't have an outdoor bookshelf, you can often find a local shop that does. There's a nice one in Achladias on Skiathos.

On an 6hr train journey, the woman opposite me was reading a Richard Laymon.
Having read a couple of them that were weirdly creepy i was intrigued when she got to the end of the book, sighed, rolled her eyes and slammed the book down.
Upon asking if it was any good she handed the book to me,said to have it and read it myself.

I think Costa or Starbucks take part in this, one of the two definitely does. And you don't need to buy any of their so called coffee, just go to the shelf to take/leave books.

Found a book like that (with sticker) in Brighton; left it in Sao Paulo.
I like the idea of foreigners finding books in their own language in unexpected places.

Having run out of my own books after about a week. Suppose I should not be surprised that I never picked up a good book, except for a collection of short stories by Brian Aldiss.

Sometimes
I've bought cheapo paperbacks to see me through a train journey and if I thought they weren't worth lugging home I'll just abandon them on the seat.
Although that might actually be littering.
