I love McCarthybut Scott-Card is a nasty, racist homophobe and I can't read him for that alone. Well, that and the fact that the Ender books are almost terminally tedious.

Each to their own....To be honest I know nothing about him as a person, the attitudes you refer to don't come across in the book I referenced above.
On the other hand, I've read lots of books about and by people I find objectionable in real life.
