The "Choose your own adventure" books were really big in the mid 1980sThey consisted of the reader as a child following the narrative for a page then being offered a choice. My favourite was the one where you're a servant in Guy of Gisbourne's castle at the time of Robin Hood and you have to make choices about whether or not to help Robin's schemes.

Oh, I know what they were It's just that the whole genre was incomprehensible to me.
I remember trying one and putting it down a few pages in because a lawnmower manual caught my eye.
