The worst of it isBeing told such things is a sure indication that it won't happen. If you don't hear it, you're more likely to get the raise/appreciation/bonus.
I always took such things for the empty words that they were so I wasn't disappointed. I've seen plenty of people really put out by those lies though so I think it's pretty disreputable.
