Got stopped after driving through a road-side check - I thought I was insured, as I'd received my renewal with "No need to do anything, we're automatically renewing your insurance" - "we'll contact you if we need anything" and "here's your policy details" on it.
Nice policeman though, he followed me home, read though the paperwork, then him and myself took it in turns to speak to the insurance people. They basically admitted a "clerical error" which meant that they had neither bothered to insure me, or to bother to let me know. They apologised and backdated my insurance, thank feck.
The stress that this put me though, even for a couple of hours, was awful - I don't envy you one bit. Definitely get legal advice, there is no way anyone should have to take the rap for the incompetence of an insurance company.
I'm just glad that the police let me know really, otherwise god knows what would have happened if I'd driven my knackered land rover into a Veryon or worse :(
