sort of. Got pulled over for not having tax (fair cop, was 11 months out of date - before they got strict) and insurance company told me they had cancelled a direct debit that day and therefore wasnt covered. Went batshit insane. 6 months later ended up in court for not having insurance. As I did, I had no problems in the end. They forgot entirely about the tax disk (or at least decided to go for the bigger 'crime').

However, my mate had very similar circumstances to you, but his DD bounced that week, and they cancelled his policy. The police went to his house also, and they found a letter that had been delievered whilst he was out stating this. But he was basically banged to rights, he had no valid policy, and the cock up with the DD was him not having the money in his account. Eventually, he was arrested, charged and got 12 months imprisonment*. So yes, get a lawyer.
