This is because at some point in the training process in most larger licensed shops and pub chains,
the trainee is shown photos of about half a dozen people and asked to guess their age. The trainee invariably gets half of them wrong, because looks can be deceptive. Not because the quoted ages are mixed up or completely fabricated in order to instil a ridiculous level of paranoia in the trainee rather than just having them rely on their common sense, oh no.
