This is a question I don't understand the attraction

Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

Hmm.
I don't think these things are 'indie' at all.
I dislike most of the bands you're talking about, because they're so middle-of-the-road, neither good or bad enough to be interesting. Just boring. However, I do think The Kooks had two good songs (forgot their names though.)
Now, Kings of Leon I really like... my musical taste is usually quite different from most of the 'mainstream' stuff, but what in heaven's name is wrong with a good pop song for example? Back to KoL, their first album was nice, but their previous album was really great. Awesome cd. Their latest one is okay as well, I don't think it's their fault that they suddenly got turned into this anthem rock band...
To be honest, people who like music but refuse to listen to ANYTHING that gets airplay annoy me. I try to give EVERYTHING a honest chance, I think pop music today is great, yes it might be cheap & cheesy, but it's still unbelievably catchy.

Soundalikes
What a lot of old twaddle. Some of you agree that some of the bands mentioned sound the same. KOL are excused for being American and The Feeling for being unpretentious pop. The two bands left that apparently sound similar are The Kooks and The View. It sounds like you've heard a few chords and decided they're the same. The View sing in a Dundonian acccent for a start and their second album was hardly mainstream (note it wasn't overplayed as a result) nor does it sound similar to every other band under the indie bracket.
