I don't understand the attraction
Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

"Yeah religion has been used as an excuse in war and whatnot"
"war and whatnot" being pretty much every war, genocide or act of torture in human history...just a little thing to get upset over, then. And it's not being used as an excuse, in most cases it's the driving force behind the most unspeakable and evil acts.
Fuck religion, it deserves no respect.

nope....
Lazy generalisations don't immediately become trufax simply because you do a swear at the end...
Have a quick look through the wars of the last century - for the sake of brevity, concentrate on those which claimed more than 1m lives. Then organise them into 'caused by religion', and 'not caused by religion'.
They all fit rather neatly into the second category.

Doi me
Oh yeah, I apologise, I'm sure the wars were started directly because of religion and had nothing to do with people making the kind of generalisations that you just made. Religion has been used in a bad way, therefor all religious people are stupid, deserve no respect and should all die in some kind of mass murder. Possibly involving gas coming out of showers.

I wouldn't like to generalise this much
But I do certainly think religion has a lot to answer for.
Most religious people I know think it gives them some moral high ground, and that believing in a God makes them a "Good Person". These are then the people that are often pious, unthinking and spiteful in many ways, not to mention being liberal with interpretation of the law in what they see as "minor" issues. (For example, driving without an MOT).
A good example was shown on "The Big Question" this last Sunday. "Should Mother Theresa be a Saint?". The man that told of the money directed away from a hospital (by her) to the Church was largely ignored, but the man that professed to have been cured by her prayer was given air time. He was a self-confessed schizophrenic and bipolar sufferer!!! Yeah, let's believe a miracle rather than fact, shall we? After all, she was such a lovely person, right...
