This is a question I don't understand the attraction

Smaug says: Ricky Gervais. Lesbian pr0n. Going into a crowded bar, purely because it's crowded. All these things seem to be popular with everybody else, but I just can't work out why. What leaves you cold just as much as it turns everyone else on?

Queen!
If someone doesn't like a band I like then that's fine by me.
If I don't like one of their bands then they usually don't care.
But as soon as I say I don't like Queen there's an uproar!

'You don't like real music!'
'Not even one song?'
'They're classic!'

Why am I supposed to like them? I agree that they're great musicians and have been a huge influence on music but I don't like any of their songs!

What makes this worse is my friends feel the need to blast out all their songs on a regular basis, singing as loud as they can while grinning and going 'haha you hate this don't you!'

Which just gives me the impression that all Queen fans are smug, ignorant cunts! (I'm sure some of you are lovely!) =)

My sympathies
I have encountered the same problem with equally militant Beatles fans.

I don't like or dislike Queen. It's just "there", really.
But yes, in fact any type of band or music genre evangelism.

"You have GOT to like this genre, it's the only true music... oh my god you've got (whatever) on your iPod! How could you! Here's a disc of some proper music, get it listened to, I expect you to be better educated as of tomorrow."

It's an absolute solid belief for some people that their taste in music is the only 'correct' one and that everybody else is wrong or ignorant to what 'proper' music is.

have a click..
just for the amount of times people have looked at me with incredulity when i tell them that i'd rather slam my cock in the car door than hear bofuckinghemian rhapsody ever again.
I did work with a bloke who was a queen obsessive, when freddie mercury died of th'bad aids. He wouldn't have it that his idol was gay - the fact he was in a band called Queen, dressed up in womans clothes and often leather and chains, and had actually contracted and died of HIV, and he refused to believe freddie took it up the wrong'un.

My brother in law was even funnier than that!
In the early 80s he so adored Queen that he constantly dressed as him, in tight jeans, white teeshirt and leather jacket. Short dark hair and moustache completed the San Francisco clone look.

This was a straight man, a macho railway coppersmith. Going down t'pub in a northern industrial town looking like a Village Person.

I bet he's burned all his old photos.

I agree
Queen are vastly overrated; The only song I like is "hammer to Fall". And I really dont rate Freddie as a singer either.

ah
I have the same trouble with bands that are supposed to be cool - that I just don't get:

My Bloody Valentine
Autechre
The Smiths
Radiohead

I like lots of bands who are like these bands, but I don't like these bands I'm supposed to like given that I like bands that are like them

I Like Queen
But still respect that you don't like any of their records. At least you had a reasoned argument recognising they've got talent but not of your taste.

I really dislike(d) Michael Jackson, more on his (ex) personality and tendency to fall back on the same old themes in his songs, but acknowledge that he had a fair singing voice and was very productive.

I only question someone's argument when they say a band is "Shit". Says more about them than the band they're slagging off.

Have a click sir.
