My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

I'm fairly sure that rhyming it with gone is the correct wayand that pronounced to rhyme with cone is the commoner's way of sounding posh. so the joke was on him.
