My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Sniffing your fingers in public.Impossible to do with any degree of class. Even if you're checking for the scent of foie gras/truffles/caviar, you should always wait 'til you're alone.
