My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

A mate of mine......has one of those 'BABY ON BOARD' signs (which do indeed annoy the fuck out of me for the reasons you stated and more besides) in the back of his car that reads:
'PERSON NO LESS VALUABLE THAN A BABY ON BOARD'
That one can be excused, surely? :)
