This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Common as... muck.
Pretty much the only thing I consider common is the inability of some parents to ensure their children are reasonably presentable in public.

How much effort does it take to brush your child's hair? Not much.

How long is it acceptable to let a kid wear a teeshirt covered in blended vegetables and gravy? Not very long.

How important is it to make sure your precious doesn't have a face full of snot, dripping off their chin and bubbling in their nose? Very important, if you want them anywhere near me.

Most parents are considerate, but the ones who let their spawn run around in a state of soiled glee give off the image of being teeth-grindingly common.

Clearly you're not a parent
I assume you're referring to toddlers some of whose unformed untrammeled egos can unpredictably spark off sustained rages & hissy fits when confronted with something that implies an unpleasant task such as an upheld comb. With my 3-year old this happens every other school morn. I have to carry him there like a sack of mewling cats, while he busily re-tangles his hair, works up a face full of drool, with tears dripping off his chin and snot bubbling in his nose. After a couple of these incidents his state of disarray bothers me not a whit. Looking through last weeks qotw it bothers me even less.

I have to wonder though-why is it so important for you to have clean presentable children anywhere near you? If you have a job that involves interacting with small children you'd best find yourself another profession.

Kids are meant to be filthy-it acts a natural peado deterrent. At least for the more discerning ones... [in a darkened room dimly lit by a flicking monitor screen Gary Glitter bemoans the obesity epidemic amongst the youth]
