This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Surely "May I have" is better than "I would like", as "I would like" isn't actually asking for anything, but just states a fact about yourself and your current desires, and makes little sense with that please on the end:

"I would like cake, please. Also, I have brown hair, please."

This is true....
I stand corrected, Sir.

I'm suddenly reminded of a Jack Dee sketch, where he has checked in to a cheap hotel somewhere north of Watford, and he is asked, "If there's no Daily Telegraph available, what'll it be?"

"Err, a disappointment?"
