My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

You make a very good point.I think the mods were having a laugh when they followed the Spoilt Brats question with this.
Still, being QOTW there will always be some quality among the lists of pet peeves and the inane snobbery.
