My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

Don't say "blacks". It's "black people".

Sorry.Over here in America that's the normal term. They're blacks, we're whites, others are Latinos or Asians or whatever.
Again, a little bit of a cultural gap that gets into our language as well.
