Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."
My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.
What stuff do you think is common?

it's the idiots who blow the accent out of all proportion, making them sound like kerry katona on smack. i've lived in liverpool my entire life, but there are plenty of people i know who i'd dearly love to throttle every time they open their mouths.
oh, and when i leave liverpool, most people ask me what part of wales i'm from.
excessive amounts of gold jewellery is just tacky. it cheapens whoever wears it and makes them look like a pretentious fool. a single gold ring or simple necklace is so much more elegant.
