My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

that thingof hocking up the phlegm then spitting disgustingly and noisily on the floor is unfortunately endemic in Chinese culture. It's totally normal there, and it's considered rude to blow your nose, and would be looked on in the same way as you regarded the spitting thing.
