This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

Me too!
ITV was pretty much frowned upon in my house when I was growing up. Children's shows at lunchtime were OK ('Let's Pretend', etc), but Saturdays were out of the question. Whenever I went round to my cousin's for tea on Saturday, it was like a holiday in a foreign land. I saw all these wonderous forbidden shows; Beadle's About, Cannon and Ball, The Price Is Right with Leslie Crowther and other until-then mythical light-entertainment gems.

Granted, Cannon and Ball were bloody awful, but then so was Ouzo and I wasn't allowed that either.
