This is a question Common

Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."

My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

What stuff do you think is common?

In most ways...
....my wifes family is distinctly upper-middle-class. They may deny this, but t'would be a foolish thing for I have many points of evidence for such (what they do for their various livings, where they live, their accents and opinions etc. etc. I shall refrain from detailing them.)

BUT...they ALL DO THIS HORRID LIP-SMACKING THING WHEN THEY EAT... and I want to KILL them for it! I was raised* in the East End, and even -I- know how impolite it is to eat with your mouth open! Good Heavens!

*'Raised' may be a loose concept in my case. See my post from last week for details (if you're bored).
