My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

lulzNon deaf people "say"* LOL as well, I think it comes from reading it so much on BBS and in game chats that people start to use it as a word.
All it takes is one person to start using it in conversation and everyone picks up on it.
*I think i've only heard it a few times in the wild, mostly its Europeans talking on voicecoms whilst gaming.
