My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

The same applies in work situationswhen writing letters.
I have worked in insurance for a few years and the number of people I know who try to sound "professional" by writing like a 1950's politician, boggles my mind.
Say, for example, a customer sends us something in the post. I'd send a letter back that would probably start:
"Dear Mr Kebabs, Thank you for your letter dated 18th October....."
Whereas some of my "intelligent" colleagues would write something like:
"Dear Sirs, Further to your correspondence of 18/10/08 we write to confirm safe receipt of the above...."
1. No one talks like that any more
2. No member of the public enjoys reading shit like that
3. It doesn't make you "posh" you orange faced slag.
