Freddy Woo writes, "My wife thinks calling the front room a lounge is common. Worse, a friend of hers recently admonished her daughter for calling a toilet, a toilet. Lavatory darling. It's lavatory."
My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.
What stuff do you think is common?

I assumed that most table manners were either just polite (ie not talking with a mouthful of food) or to relay a message to the waiting staff (ie turning your water / wine glass upside down to indicate that you don't want any).
Yes, you can take things to extremes, but the basics should really be employed when dining anywhere more sophisticated than KFC.
