My own mother refused to let me use the word 'oblong' instead of 'rectangle'. Which is just odd, to be honest.

You're bloody right.I am a Northerner and I refuse to call a bread roll a "barm cake" or a "bun"
Cakes and buns are sweet, bread rolls are not.
