Is boring a sin?
I confess I have never read a word of Harry Potter or seen the movies. I have no idea what happens in LOTR. Lady Gaga - ear rape or best ever? I wouldn't know. I do love you, popular culture, but some things have just passed me by.

Can I make up for it by confessing that I listen to test matches on the radio when out bush?

A little bit of both.
I work out bush a lot and so quite a bit passes me by, but for Harry Potter I just cannot bring myself to read/watch it. There is something creepy about the whole obsession with it that has put me off.

You're never missing anything by skipping one particular piece of culture
no matter how hard its fans try to tell you otherwise. I personally rate HP and Lady Gaga, but not LOTR.

I'm sure you have your own pieces of culture you wouldn't give up for a big clock.

You've completely missed the point.
What he's "sneering at" is the current idea that "all writing (or music, art, whatever) is equally valid" and the only difference between high art and churned-out shit is one of snobbery.
Everyone buys into this postmodern wankfest because it gives them a good excuse not to try anything difficult.
