The trick with ensuring yor best man won't turn things into a shocker with his speech is (as I did) to make sure you're their best man as well. That way they know whatever you do to them, you'll give back in spades. When my best man, one of the cheekiest bastards I've ever met, a man renowned for his foul mouth, took to the podium everyone in the room leaned forward in anticipation... And heard one of the nicest, most heartfelt speeches in years. Mates were disappointed, the wife was relieved and delighted, and as he sat back down he muttered "you owe me BIG time."

and i told him last night, "remember, you're not as funny as you think you are!"
