Bill Bryson
related a tale in his book 'I'm a stranger here myself' where he did exactly this because he was frustrated with the phone monkey rigidly following policy.
Knowing Bryson though, he probably made it up. But from the fingers of Apeloverage, it is taken as gospel truth.
