Badger
I was maybe 5 (definately primary school) and we found a dead badger in the woods by the park. It looked like it was asleep (ah!) but when prodded with my foot, maggots came out resulting in my morbid fear of badgers ever since.

I had a very similar experience
Driving home one night a mother possum had abandoned her litter on the road to my house... I only stopped because I couldn't understand why there was one just writhing in the middle of the road... well, all of them got away except one, who was probably either in shock or had actually been grazed in the head by a vehicle... poor little thing could have fit in your palm. Anyway I took it home (without touching it of course) and my mother vehemently sent me to the backyard. I laid it down on a stump and hoped everything would be okay, even though I knew it wouldn't be (funny how you still have those hopes when you're 17)

Came back in the morning and the little git was already infested with maggots. Had to stifle my retching as I buried it. Poor Mr. Possum :-(
