It was a school fashion...but that is really no excuse. The uniform specified that we wore cream over-the-knee socks. It was the fashion to pull them up to just below the knee and to carefully concertina the excess material around the ankle - this was coupled with large clumpy shoes. The school en masse gave the impression that elephantitius of the foot was cutting a swathe through the young women of Surrey.
