EDIT: This was about 1986-7, As I said I wasn't sure how the scam was accomplished but it was as I described. card transactions had extras added on which was then taken out of cash transactions to balance the bills and the extras pocketed.
If anyone has any working knowledge of an eighties PDQ machine that would be helpful.
