Which is ruder?Rubbing other people's noses in the fact that you can afford more expensive wine or suggesting that they are incapable of choosing wine to go with a meal?

WineWine doesn't have to be expensive to be good. The couple who pulled this stunt on a regular basis had attended "wine appreciation classes" so knew what they were doing. As I said, they were just cheap.
