Germans in the Dock
Not exactly faking it - more bluffing.

The story about the translator reminds me of the other Scottish Court story (no doubt apocryphal) about the old fella who was up before the sheriff for careless driving.

He was banged to rights - caught driving the wrong way down the motorway and lets face it there's not much of a defence to that. His solicitor had done a good plea in mitigation - no previous convictions etc. The usual stuff. He also mentioned that the old guy had a fantastic war record and had received medals for gallantry.

The sheriff, apparently became interested and asked the accused "Really - I was in the war myself. Which regiment were you with?"

"9th SS Panzer Division" comes the reply.

No idea what the sentence was...

my ladyfriend is German
I've met her grandad who served under the great man himself in WWII. Try telling any "allied" country citizen his stories though and they look at you like you have two heads.

An old girlfiend of mine was third-generation German
Her nan had married a British soldier at the end of the war. Somehow he never seemed too bothered by the fact that pride of place on the mantelpiece went to a photo of her childhood sweetheart, who was killed on the Eastern Front. And the photo had him in full SS uniform. Bit creepy?
