...I used to live near the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville and did a few fundraising discos/events for them. Met Jimmy Savile quite a few times - he worked as a wardsman at the hospital (after he was famous). He seemed to be a very caring guy but I have never met anyone who swore like he did. It was like being with a hardcore Tourettes' sufferer. He did indeed smoke like a chimney (cigars) but I never saw him smoke inside the hospital - perhaps someones' mum scared him off?!
Never found him creepy or odd around kids. He was totally consumed by his public image and super-conscious about how he was perceived by the public. He was aware of the rumours about his supposed sexual preference for children and said that was why he told people he didn't like children - it was his attempt at deflecting the (never proven) rumours.
Pesonally I think the paedophile rumours were just the result of the insidious 'tall poppy' syndrome.

...yes he was quite proud of his innovation in using two turntables!
He was very interested in my Technics SL 1200 mk2s - but just couldn't embrace the concept of mixing - "What? So you don't use the fucking microphone then?"
