You might like La Haine (Hate) which is about race relations and violent sub-culture in France. And it's in black and white, so it must be arty.

May I also add Lola Rennt in the original German - very funny.

And on the subject of pretendingto be gay, Der bewegte mann (A man moved) which I saw when it first came out (as it were) and was pretty funny.

And Forrest Gump, which I originally saw in German, is slightly less annoying than in English.
